Every student in Statistics 1060 should be registered in a tutorial. All tutorial sections will meet in LSC 200. Tutorials begin on Monday January 4. Students are expected to attend tutorials which will include computer work and group problem solving. During the term there will be two quizzes in tutorial each of which accounts for 6% of the final grade. The remaining part of the tutorial grade (8% of the final grade) comes from work done in the tutorial itself.

Note: There will be no supplemental examination in this course.

Textbook and Course Materials:

Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, Third Edition by David S. Moore and George P. McCabe with accompanying Minitab Manual by Michael Evans. You will also need a 3" floppy disk for computer work, a calculator and two colored folders for submitting assignments.

If your last name begins with A - C, you need two yellow folders
If your last name begins with D - G, you need two red folders
If your last name begins with H - L, you need two black folders
If your last name begins with M - O, you need two green folders
If your last name begins with P - S, you need two blue folders
If your last name begins with T - Z, you need two gray folders

The software package being used in tutorials is MINITAB rel 12. If you wish to lease this software for one year for your computer at home, you may do so for $30 at PCPC. The system requirements to run this software are:

Windows 95 or Windows NT (version 3.51 or 4.0)
16MB RAM
CD-ROM drive
PC with 486 or higher processor
25 MB hard disc space
VGA or SVGA monitor
Mouse required
Math coprocessor strongly recommended

You will also need the data disc for Statistics courses which can be purchased for $1.50 at the Digital Media Centre (next to B271, basement of the Killam Library)

If you wish to work from home but do not have a computer that will support MINITAB rel 12, you can access MINITAB rel 7 on gs.dal.ca. To use gs you need a computer with a modem and a gs account. To get a gs account, you must sign up for an is2 account at the Computer Centre in the basement of the Killam Library. If you have an is2 account and are registered in Statistics 1060, you will automatically get a gs account. If you are accessing MINITAB release 7 on gs from home, you don't need the data disc as all the data sets are available on gs.

1060 Mailbox and Information Area:

The 1060 Mailbox and Information Area is located in the basement of the Chase Building down the hall from the Math/Stats Learning Centre. Notices about the course will be posted here and extra copies of assignments and course outlines will be available. Across the hall from the 1060 Mailbox are bulletin boards where the answers to practice problems and assignment questions will be posted. Assignments should be submitted to the 1060 Mailbox.

Assignments:

There will be weekly assignments. Students will submit assignments in colored folders, color-coded by surname, to the 1060 Mailbox. These assignments should be put in the 1060 Mailbox by 5:30 pm on the date they are due. The assignment will be considered late otherwise.

Your assignments will be graded by graduate students or senior undergraduates. They will expect work which is neat, legible, and which includes a sufficient amount of clear explanation so that they do not have to guess what you have in mind. They are not required to accept assignments which are difficult to read. When you are writing up your assignment, submit the questions in the order in which they were assigned. Note that the assignments should be done on 81/2 " X 11" paper and submitted in a folder of the appropriate color. Some assignments involve computer work. Do not submit the entire printout with your assignment. You should tape or staple only the relevant portions of the printout into your assignment.

Procedure to be used if you are unhappy with your assignment mark: (1) Check the posted solutions, (2) if still dissatisfied, resubmit your assignment to the coordinator with a note attached to it clearly stating your objection(s); (3) still unhappy? See the coordinator, K. Bowen.

A few days after assignments are submitted a complete answer key will be posted on the bulletin board across from the 1060 Mailbox. In the Math/Stats Learning Centre there will be copies of the answer key available for photocopying. The answer key will also be available on the Statistics 1060 website.

Graded assignments can be picked up from boxes on the table next to the 1060 Mailbox.

Midterm:

The midterm will be held on Monday March 1 from 6:30 to 8:30, the locations to be announced later. Anyone with a conflict should speak to K. Bowen before February 15.

Extra Help:

Should you require help, your first recourse should be to attend tutorials and to see the tutors at the Math/Stats Learning Centre located in the basement of the Chase Building.

The instructors on the teaching team will have office hours. If you still have a problem with a particular section of the course, see the appropriate instructor during his/her office hours.

The coordinator will deal with all administrative aspects of Statistics 1060 such as course changes, conflicts, notes for illness, etc. A doctor's note is required for documenting illness. If you miss the midterm due to illness or other legitimate excuse, you should contact the coordinator. For those students whose excuses for missing the midterm have been accepted as legitimate, there will be a makeup midterm on Friday March 5. This will be the only makeup exam for the midterm. If you miss both the midterm and the makeup with legitimate excuses for missing both exams, you will need to consult the coordinator about how your final grade will be calculated.

Note that there will be no makeup for tutorial quizzes. If you miss one of the tutorial quizzes and you have a legitimate excuse, your final exam mark will count for 46% of the final mark instead of 40%.

In Class Quizzes:

These quizzes will take place during the lecture period. Each student will be given an index card and will be asked to write a one sentence answer to a question posed by the instructor. Full marks will be given if the answer is correct and expressed clearly.

Practice Problems:

Practice problems are assigned for each week. These are only for practice and are not to be handed in. The solutions to the practice problems will be posted on the bulletin boards across from the 1060 Mailbox and will be available throughout the term in the Stats 1060 binders in the Math/Stats Learning Centre.
