Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the probability models and statistical methods most likely to be encountered and used by students in engineering and the natural sciences.

Assignments and Solutions


There will normally be assignments every week during the term which must be handed in at class on the day they are due. Late assignments will not be accepted. Solutions will be posted on this website after the due date.

If you know in advance that you will not be in class the day an assignment is due you will be expected to hand it in prior to the due date. If that is not possible please see me to make other arrangements.

Some assignments may require the use of the MINITAB statistical package. MINITAB release 14 is available on campus at computer labs in LSC 200, LSC 2084, LSC 2087, MMASS2018, MMASS 2019, MMASS 2020, killam B433, Killam B400, Killam Learning Commons and Chase 007.

Your lowest homework grade will be dropped.


Unhappy about your assignment mark?

use the following procedure:

  1. Check the posted solutions. If still not convinced

  2. Resubmit the assignment at the next round with a note to the marker explaining the nature of your complaint. Still unhappy?

  3. Make an appointment to see me.

Midterm Exam

Feb.27 (Tues.), 10:05-11:25am on class. At SIR JAMES DUNN 135.

This is closed notes and closed book exam, but one page of formula sheet (Legal sized paper with double sided writing) will be permitted.

A calculator is needed for your exam, make sure you bring the calculator with you.

No make-up midterm will be given.

If you know in advance that you will not be able to take the midterm on the day it will be given, you may take it early. If you need to take it early please let me know as soon as possible.

Final Exam

The final exam schedule: Wednesday Apr 11, 14:00 Dal Arena

The final will be open book, closed notes with one page of formula sheet allowed.

A calculator is needed for your exam, make sure you bring the calculator with you.


There will be no supplemental examination to this course.
